China’s Domestic Garment Sales Increased by 0.4% MoM in January This Month With the improvement of living standards, people’s pursuit of beauty is getting higher and higher, and the proportion of clothing in the daily expenses of people, especially females, has gradually increased.

According to a routine press briefing of the Ministry of Commerce held on February 20, in January, sales in the domestic market maintained steady growth. According to the monitoring of the Ministry of Commerce, sales of 3,000 key retailers increased by 4.5% from last December. The sales of products such as food and clothing grew faster. In particular, sales of foodstuffs and clothing have maintained rapid growth. Of the 3,000 key retail enterprises monitored by the Ministry of Commerce, sales of food, clothing, and daily necessities increased by 11.6%, 0.4%, and 1.7% respectively.

According to customs statistics, the total amount of imports and exports in January was 2.17 trillion yuan, an increase of 26.7% year-on-year. Among them, exports 1.18 trillion yuan, an increase of 25%; imports 0.99 trillion yuan, an increase of 28.8%; trade surplus of 183.21 billion yuan, an increase of 7.7%. After adjusting for the effect of the Spring Festival season, the export and import increased by 8.1%, of which exports increased by 12.4% and imports increased by 3.4%. The export of traditional labor-intensive products grew steadily, with a total of US$41.03 billion in apparel, textiles, footwear, furniture, bags, and toys, up 25.1%.

In January, 1,883 newly-established foreign-invested enterprises were established in the country, an increase of 34.3% year-on-year; actual use of foreign investment was US$9.27 billion, a year-on-year decrease of 7.3%. The actual use of foreign investment in service industry has fallen more than that of manufacturing; EU investment in China has grown by a large margin; foreign investment in the eastern, central and western regions has declined.

In January, domestic investors in China conducted direct investment in 777 overseas companies in 123 countries and regions around the world, accumulatively achieving non-financial direct investment of US$4,914 million, an increase of 12.3% year-on-year.
