U.S. scientific research shows that nano-clothing may be at risk

A report released by the U.S. National Research Council on Wednesday stated that investigating the potential risks of nanotechnology still requires investing 24 million U.S. dollars each year. The United States should establish a new federal regulatory agency to integrate research results from private companies, universities, and international organizations.

The study was sponsored by the US Environmental Protection Agency and a committee of 19 scientists conducted the study. Nanotechnology is currently used extensively in antifouling clothing, cosmetics and food additives.

In 2009, sales of related products were about 225 billion U.S. dollars, which will rise rapidly in the next 10 years.

The results of the study stated that “Although the nanotechnology promises great prospects, there is currently no strategic study on the related risks and how to manage and avoid risks. The prospects for safe and sustainable nanomaterials, products and processes are still uncertain.” Humans have not fully understood the environmental, health, and safety implications of engineered nanomaterials.

The U.S. Federal Center for Disease Control stated that there are indications that nanoparticles can penetrate the skin and enter other organs from the respiratory system.

The report said that currently, half of nanomaterials come from ceramic nanoparticles, and the other 20% come from carbon nanotubes and nanoporous materials.

In the 2012 annual budget, the U.S. federal government has allocated US$123.5 million to study the safety issues of engineered nanomaterials, which will remain stable over the next five years.

In addition, public, private and international organizations will invest 5 million U.S. dollars each year to collect and disseminate information on engineered nanomaterials, and will invest 10 million U.S. dollars in engineering nanomaterials instruments.
